This study focuses on the challenges linked to the elements that affect the motivation and engagement of students in Buddhist education at Junior High School 2 Mempawah Hilir, including (1) the aspects that impact students' motivation in Buddhist education, and (2) the aspects that affect students' learning engagement in Buddhist education. The objective of this research is to articulate the elements that influence students' motivation and engagement in this subject. A qualitative descriptive approach has been employed for this study. Data was gathered through interviews and observations. Interviews involved the principal, vice principal responsible for curriculum, vice principal for student affairs, parents, and ninth-grade students studying Buddhism. Observations were made both directly and indirectly by completing a designated form. From the conducted research, it is evident that there are four key elements that affect both motivation and student engagement in learning. Firstly, motivation serves as a crucial factor that enhances students' focus, enthusiasm, and joy, making it easier for them to persist without losing interest or forgetting what they have learned. Secondly, learning engagement is shaped by physiological factors encompassing physical conditions (sensory) and psychological aspects, which cover attention, response, and memory. While the physical state acts as a limiting factor impacting students' learning engagement. In addition, external influences on students' learning activities include non-social factors like environment and resources, as well as social factors such as teachers and peers. The environment, resources, and teachers are supporting factors for enhancing students' learning engagement. Conversely, peers play a role in motivating students and guiding them in a positive manner.
